Pothos N Joy Vs Pothos Glacier

If you want to know the key difference and similarities between Pothos N Joy and Pothos Glacier. Then you are at the right place because today I will explain how they are different from each other. And what things do you need to grow both of the plants?

Both pothos is from the same family but has different lighting needs, temperature, and humidity needs.

Without wasting time let’s move to the main part.

The Size

Pothos N Joy grows taller than the Pothos Glacier. The growing conditions in the grow room and the type and size of the pot highly impact the plant growth.

Pothos N Joy grows 10 to 12 feet tall under ideal conditions. Whereas the glacier stays smaller and only grows up to 4 to 6 feet tall.

In order to keep the plants in the desired shape you can use plant trimming techniques.

For pruning always use sterilized tools to prevent unwanted diseases and plant problems.

The leaves

The overall appearance of both plant leaves is heart-shaped. But the Pothos N Joy does not have a true heart shape. The leaves are more oval in shape than the glacier pothos.

Also, the top and below the surface of the N joy plant leaves have a perfect waxy texture. That you can easily feel on touch.

If you look closely, you will observe that the pothos glacier has smaller leaves than the Pothos N Joy. Generally, the pothos plant has large size leaves. The leaves of the pothos glacier are smaller than most varieties of the pothos.

Leaf Patterns

From the pattern of leaves or the variegation, you can easily differentiate the plants.

The Pothos N Joy has a beautiful pattern of green and white color. The green color dominates the center of the plant leaf. Whereas the white color spread along the outer edges. This gives a strong appearance to the N joy pothos.

On the other hand, the Pothos Glacier has similar green and white color patterns. The green color is more in the leaves as compared to the white color.

The green color in Pothos glacier is more dominant than the white patterns that mostly appear in the form of streaks.

Flowers

Indoor growing Pothos N Joy does not produce flowers. Because to produce beautiful flowers this plant needs to get completely matured.

But in plant pots, they do not gain their full size. This is the reason they do not bloom even during their blooming time.

You cannot push them to flower with the help of fertilizers or lighting.

Grow them in your outdoor garden and they will flower.

Due to the small size of Pothos Glacier, there are bright chances of blooming. They can easily reach their maximum maturity of 6 feet in a big size plant pot.

For flowering, Glacier pothos needs proper light and humidity 365 days a year.

Note: People do not care about flowers. They grow these pothos plants because of their beautiful foliage and variegation.

Temperature and humidity

Both plants are indoor houseplants but they need different temperatures to thrive.

The pothos n Joy needs 65 to 85 degrees F to grow. But it can tolerate low temperatures up to 50 degrees F. Below this range, the plant starts suffering from cold and respiratory issues.

Pothos Glacier needs little warm room to grow and to maintain its health.

In general, for both the plants keep the room temperature between 50 to 80 degrees F.

Keep the humidity between 50 to 70 %. This range is good for growing and caring for Pothos N Joy and Pothos Glacier.

In case of low humidity, use humidifiers to increase it.

You can also use the traditional and easy pebble tray method. Just make sure the tray always has sufficient water in it.

Note: The water level should not touch the bottom hole of the plant pot. Or the plant roots will start absorbing the water of the tray and get root rot.

Growth rate

The pothos N Joy grows slower than the pothos glacier. This means you have more control over the Joy pothos and you do not need to do frequent pruning.

This saves lots of time and you can do other work in this time period.

In the case of glacier pothos, you need to do frequent trimming to keep the plant in the desired shape.

Repotting needs

Both plants need repotting once the roots get bound or you see them coming out of the draining hole.

If you do not repot it on time then it will start wilting and stop growing.

This clears that repotting is necessary for good growth.

The pothos glacier needs first repotting right after 2 years of age. Whereas the slower growth of pothos N Joy delays the repotting time.

The similarities between Pothos N Joy and Pothos Glacier

Now that you know the differences, it’s time to know the similarities between Pothos N Joy and Pothos Glacier.

Light needs

Pothos N Joy and Glacier need filtered light. Do not explore your plants to direct sunlight.

This will damage the leaves of both pothos plants and your plants will die in a few days.

Once the plant leaves get sunburn marks you cannot revive them. The only option is to change the place of the plant and cut the brown leaves.

In the case of low light, both the pothos N Joy and Glacier do not produce good variegation. The leaves do not grow large, they look undersized and weak.

Also, the N Joy leaves do not develop their waxy texture.

Watering plants

In their active growing season (spring and summer) these pothos need water once in 4 days.

But in the winter season water your plants once in 7 to 10 days depending upon the condition of the soil.

If the top 2 inches of the soil are dry then pour some water otherwise let the top two layers of soil dry.

Underwatered pothos develops yellow leaves due to loss of moisture in the plant leaves. In this condition immediately give clean water to your plants. They will turn green in few days.

Caution: Overwatering pothos is hard to save. Once they get infected by root rot you cannot review the plants. In the early stage of infection, you can cut the infected parts of the roots. But in the advanced stage propagation is the way to save the same variety of plants.

Potting soil

Fast-draining soil is required for the best health of the pothos plants.

There are special potting soils that are only made for pothos plants. You can buy such soil from the market and use it for growing Pothos N Joya and Pothos Glacier.

Do not use garden soil because garden soil becomes tight in plant pots.

When you water garden soil it becomes soggy and heavy. Because it holds a good amount of water that results in root rot.

Fertilizing

The good news is you do not need to give fertilizers to your pothos.

They do not need extra nutrients to grow. The percentage of nutrients in the potting soil is enough for them to grow and maintain their good health.

But for the overall best possible care and growth you can use normal houseplant fertilizers.

I prefer water-soluble liquid nutrients. Dilute the small quantity of it according to the instructions on the bottle. Then pour directly to the base of the plant.

Use the nutrient supplements only in Spring and Summer seasons.

Toxicity

Both the pothos have toxic effects if ingested in large quantities.

They are mildly toxic and cause stomach pain and irritation in the mouth and throat.

In some cases, they cause diarrhea and vomiting. In this condition, call medical help immediately.

Pest problems

Spider mites and Mealybugs are the two pests that you can see on your pothos if you do not give them proper care.

Generally, both pothos n joy and glaciers are resistant to common pests.

To get rid of these small sapsuckers you need to use rubbing alcohol or insecticidal soap.

Pour rubbing alcohol on the cotton cloth and wipe the plant leaves. If you feel wiping all the leaves is a tough job. Then use the second option which is insecticidal soap.

Wash your plant with it and get rid of mealybugs and spider mites.

Brown leaves

Crispy brown leaves are the result of high bright light or direct sunlight. Place your plant away from direct sunlight and cut the brown leaves. It will start producing green leaves.

If you use high-power grow light you will surely see brown leaves. Because they also emit highly intense sharp rays.

Root rot

It is caused by overwatering. When roots of the pothos get wet they start rotting and your plants show yellow leaves.

To prevent this condition, use the perfect watering technique.

In case, the roots get infected by root fungus, take the plant out of the pot and cut the infected portion of the roots. Then plant the pothos N Joy and Pothos Glacier back in the pot.
