Introduction
The Goldfish Plant gets its name from its beautiful flowers, which look like leaping fish. In summer and spring, it grows red and orange flowers.
It is easy to grow and care for a goldfish plant. People who are thinking of growing a plant can start from this.
It needs a limited amount of indirect bright light, moderate watering, occasional fertilizing, and a little bit of love.
Today, I’ll share some of my experiences with this unique plant. By the end of this lesson, you’ll have all the knowledge you need to take care of one.
Without wasting time let’s quickly jump to the main part:
Section 1: Plant Overview
Name and Family
The Goldfish Plant (Columnea, Nematanthus gregarious) belongs to the Gesneriaceae family. This perennial plant is renowned for its fish-like red and orange flowers and dark glossy leaves.
Origin
Native to South America and Central America the Goldfish plant adapts a variety of indoor and outdoor growing conditions. Just protect it from direct sunlight and you can grow it in an outside area.
The best option for this plant as per my experience is hanging baskets.
Varieties of Goldfish Plants
Nematanthus ‘Tropicana’: This plant has pretty flowers with red and orange stripes.
Nematanthus ‘Green Magic’: This one features bright orange flowers.
Nematanthus ‘Black Gold’: This plant has shiny red leaves and orange-yellow flowers.
Columnea ‘Light Prince’: This cultivar shows off bright orange and yellow blooms.
Columnea ‘Aladdin’s Lamp’: This plant has dark black leaves and red flowers.
Columnea ‘Chanticleer’: This goldfish plant produces yellow flowers with red tips that are shaped like tubes.
Section 2: Ideal Growing Conditions
Light Requirements
To help your plant develop glossy bright green foliage, place it in good bright light.
The direct sunshine falling on plants can damage their leaves and flowers. Therefore, place the plant pot away from direct sunlight.
Low light is also not beneficial because it triggers stretchy growth and your plant will only grow leaves and no flowers.
The ideal place will be the east-facing window where it can enjoy filtered sunshine or limited time.
And If you are planning to grow it outdoors then grow it under the shadow of large trees. Because the tree leaves block the direct sunlight and it enjoys the indirect light in the shade.
Watering Needs
You should be very careful with watering the goldfish plant. The secret to success is to keep the soil moist for 365 days. But the problem is to do so people often give it extra water. Which results in root rot and fungal leaves.
To protect your plant from overwatering the first step is choosing the right type of potting soil. Well-draining soil is perfect and it can handle accidental overwatering. As the name suggests it allows the extra water to drain out of the bottom hole of the plant pot.
The next thing you can do is learn the right watering technique.
Below are the steps:
- Before watering your plant insert your finger in the soil to check the soil moisture.
- If it is dry then you can water your plant, if it has moisture then wait for 24 hours and check again.
- While watering goldfish plants do not stop until the water starts draining through the bottom hole. Then allow your plant to absorb the required amount of water and drain every extra drop.
- After 1 hour you will see a good amount of drained water in the saucer, empty it, dry it with cloth, and place it under the pot.

Temperature & Humidity
65 to 80 degrees F is the ideal temperature range for this plant. Below 65 F will cause many problems like freezing internal plant tissues.
Also, don’t let it hang outside in winter and cold winds.
To maintain a good level of humidity first use the humidity meter to measure it. Then act as per the readings. In most cases, growers will not need to use methods of increasing the humidity.
Because the normal home humidity is enough for it. In the US the general home humidity is between 45% to 60 % throughout the year. This range is perfect for goldfish place care and growth.
Just in case your plant shows low humid signs then mist some water on its leaves. Do not overdo it 3 to 4 sprays are more than enough.
Care Requirements Table
| Care Requirement | Details |
| Light | Bright, indirect light |
| Water | Moderate Watering after Soil Check |
| Temperature | 60 to 80 degrees F |
| Humidity | 40% to 60% |
| Soil | Fast-draining including perlite |
Section 3: Care Tips
Potting Soil
The soil that we use to grow houseplants plays an important role in growth, immunity, and overall health.
Peat, perlite, and vermiculite must be the top ingredients of the potting mix for the goldfish plant. Soil mixes that are made for epiphytic plants will do best.
Fast-draining soil is the only option for goldfish plants. Because these plants cannot survive in water-rich soil.
Moreover, such type of soil quickly drains the extra water and keeps your plant protected from root fungus and other fungal diseases.
Do not mix normal garden soil in the potting mix of goldfish plants. Garden soil has the property to store high amounts of water for a long time.
This soil also becomes heavy after soaking the moisture and this puts extra pressure on plant roots. Sometimes plants die due to the suffocated roots.
Fertilizing
To help your plant grow healthy you must use some amount of fertilizers. The potting mixes that we buy from the market do not contain a good amount of nutrients.
To fulfill the demand for nutrients you must use the weak liquid form of nutrients.
Buy any normal houseplant fertilizer in liquid form. Then take the desired amount of nutrient solution and dilute it in the clean water at the time of watering your plant.
Do not use costly high-end fertilizers they will not do anything extra.
Remember that plants always need nutrients at a slower rate. This makes a chain of nutrients and a plant never goes out of essential nutrients.
To avoid overfeeding, fertilize your plant only in the spring and summer season once in 20 to 30 days.
Repotting
Goldfish plants need repotting once in 2 years. For potting up, you should pick the one-size large pot. The material can be plastic, ceramic, or terracotta.
Do not choose an extra-large pot, this will only cause problems.
At the time of reporting, you should also check the root health. Gently remove the dry and dead roots. Doing so will encourage the formation of new roots.
Goldfish Plant Propagation
Steam cutting is a highly successful method of goldfish plant propagation.
In this technique:
You need to find a healthy stem of the plant.
Then use sharp shears to cut it. It should be 4 to 5 inches long with a few leaves at the top.
The Spring season is the best time for propagation.
Dip the cut edge in the rooting hormone and plant it in the potting soil. Use the same quality of the soil that you use for growing the mother plant.
Place the cutting in a warm and humid place this increases the chances of root formation.
Within 15 to 20 days you will new tiny leaves. This means now you have one more plant.
Pruning
This part is necessary to keep the plant healthy and disease-free. Pruning simply means cleaning the plant and its pot.
Use a sterilized sharp knife and cut the dry and dead vines and leaves.
Also, check the soil and add it if necessary.
Check the leaves, and look for the signs of pests and infections. Remove the infected leaves and spray the neem oil on the entire plant.
Section 4: Common Issues
Pests and Diseases
Check for Aphids, Spider mites, and Mealybugs. These are the common pests that infect tropical climate plants like goldfish.
Once you see them on your plant leaves immediately separate your infected plant from other healthy plants. This will keep the other plants safe and healthy.
Use insecticidal soap and wash your plant by using tap water. Let it drain extra water, and keep it separate until you see the healthy new growth.
Signs of Stress
Yellow leaves on the goldfish plant mean it is under stress. Overwatering is the main cause of plant stress. Because it causes many other problems.
Closely check the leaves and stems to know about the current health status of your plant.
