What is Cebu blue pothos?

Cebu blue belongs to the very common houseplant family called the Araceae family. It has silvery-blue leaves that shine well under the correct lighting conditions.

It is naturally found in many parts of Asia. Even some European countries grow this plant in greenhouses. They have a hybrid and more rugged variety of Cebu blue.

In ideal growing conditions, the Cebu plant grows up to 40 feet tall with the help of some kind of support. But when we grow it as an indoor plant due to the small space for roots it only grows a few feet. My Cebu blue is 3.5 feet tall.

Cebu Blue Pothos care Guide

To care for Cebu blue, you need to stick to a strict caring routine. Below are the main points that you should keep in your mind while growing it. This is the ultimate care routine that I follow for caring for my Cebu blue. Take a pen and paper to make important notes.

Light requirements

Again, this is an indoor plant and you need to protect it from direct sunlight. A medium kind of light is enough for this plant.

Therefore, you need to locate a place in your residence where this plant can get indirect bright light. The light source can be Sun or Grow lights. If you are going to use grow lights. Do not forget to turn them off at night time. Plants also need darkness to sleep and to repair themselves.

All the growth that a plant show gains in the nighttime.

Do not grow it outside because it looks more beautiful as an indoor plant. Put the plant pot close to the east-facing window to full fill its light needs. To avoid sunburn and leaf burn install a curtain on the window.

Note: Direct falling sun rays increase the temperature of the plant and potting soil. This increases the need for watering applications.

In low light areas, Cebu blue pothos will not produce shining plants. Therefore, you need to take care of the light in the room.

Moreover, in low-light areas, the plants show leggy growth. They stretch their growth towards the light source and produce fewer leaves.

Watering Cebu blue pothos

The good news is this plant does not need much water to grow. To maintain its health, water it like you water your other indoor plants.

First of all, check the soil conditions and then water your plants. Soak it completely and then let it drain excess water. For the next watering, the session waits for the soil to be dry to its half.

Remember that the quality of the water directly impacts the health of a plant.

The water has to be drinkable and free from heavy minerals. In many parts of the country, tap water is not useful for drinking. But it is good for watering plants.

Before using your tap water for watering get it tested by the local water authorities. In some cities, you can find the water test report on the website of your hydro authorities.

Note: The excess water in the pot causes root rot. This is a dangerous condition for a plant. You need to avoid overwatering to keep your plants safe from fungus diseases.

Potting soil

For every houseplant, you need the two most important qualities in the soil. The same rule applies to the Cebu blue pothos care.

The soil mixture must have perlite and orchid bark to boost plant health. Some growers advise using vermiculite. But I do not prefer it because it holds more moisture than the perlite. If you accidentally water more than vermiculite increase the chances of root infection.

Vermiculite is useful when plants need a heavy amount of water all the time.

To make indoor gardening easy buy a big bag of general-purpose potting soil for the Amazon. Then add different ingredients to it to make it suitable for different indoor plants.

It does not matter if you are growing it in hanging baskets or in plant pots. The soil must be the same in all conditions. To make it a tall plant you can give some kind of support to it.

Temperature

Temperature directly impacts plant health. Sudden high or low-temperature drops put stress on the plant and it stops growing.

But in the case of Cebu blue pothos, you do not need to worry about the temperature range. Because the normal household temperature of US homes is perfect for growing and caring for pothos plants. Your Cebu blue pothos is not different. They will surely enjoy your home environment.

Our home temperature ranges between 15 to 26 degrees C at several times of the year.

Your Cebu blue pothos can easily survive in it. All you need to do is protect your plant from the direct flow of heating vents and AC.

Humidity

Again, you also do not need to worry about the humidity levels. Because it can tolerate the natural home humidity. No doubt in its native place it grows in high humidity. But it has the capabilities to survive in a moderate air moisture environment.

In case you feel that the air moisture is low and your plant is turning yellow. Then you can use the pebble tray to increase it

Or

You can adapt the professional method which is an electric plant humidifier. This is the device that is used to increase the air moisture of the grow room.

Place it next to your plant and turn it ON. It will increase the moisture level in the entire room in few minutes.

Plant humidifiers consume less electric power as compared to normal room humidifiers.

Fertilizing Cebu blue pothos

If the soil you are using contains organic material and has good fertility. Then you do not need to buy extra fertilizers for the Cebu blue pothos. Because the soil that contains organic material releases nutrients at a slower rate.

Hence the plant always has a good amount of nutrients.

But if you really care for your plant and want blue pothos to grow long and strong. Then for proper Cebu blue pothos care, you need to give it an extra nutrient boost.

Buy liquid general-purpose houseplant fertilizer that has micronutrients and macronutrients.

These are the essential nutrients for a plant to grow healthy. Read the instructions of the bottle and dilute the liquid fertilizer accordingly. Then pour it to the base of the plant. Spraying it on plant stems and leaves will burn the beauty of Cebu pothos.

Pruning

Pruning is required to keep the plant short. Because it is a climbing plant if you give it support. It will grow tall like a money plant. Trim it exactly like you trim other vining plants that climb on walls.

Also cut them and remove the dry and dead leaves along with the yellow leaves. Once the leaves turn yellow, they cannot turn green again. To save your plant’s energy and also to divert it for further growth. You need to cut and remove the yellow plant leaves.

Repotting

Repotting of Cebu blue pothos is necessary only when you see the roots coming out of the topsoil level. The overly grown roots also come out from the bottom hole.

In both conditions, you need to change the plant pot.

Buy 1.5 inches deep and wide pot than the current plant pot. Use fresh soil and plant your Cebu blue in it.

After repotting give it a good amount of water and place it back in its place. Spring and summer are the time for repotting.

Toxicity

Yes, this plant is toxic to pets and humans. Skin redness, swelling, and pain are the few common symptoms of toxicity. When the plant stem or leaves are ingested by pets or children.

When you see any of the mentioned signs immediately call the doctor or visit the nearest hospital.

Propagation of Cebu blue pothos

Cebu blue pothos is easy to multiply with the propagation method. For this particular plant, you have two options one is stem cutting and the second is single leaf propagation. Below are both methods, read them and choose which one you feel is easy for you.

Stem Cutting

For this method, you need healthy stem cutting. It has to be 6 inches long with one healthy leaf. You can put it in a glass of water or directly plant it in the pot. None of the methods is better than the others. The only difference is you can visibly see the growth of new roots in water.

But I always use stem-cutting techniques to propagate plants. Therefore, I will only tell my experience with it.

The cutting must have one or more nodes. They are required because new roots will shoot from nodes.

You need to change the water of the glass once in 7 days. Both methods take some time to develop new roots. You should place the glass of water and pot at a warm temperature in high humidity.

If there is low humidity and you want to increase it. Then you can use a plastic bag to cover the glass or the pot. This will increase the humidity and protect your stem cuttings from insects and pollution.

Common diseases and problems

Mealybugs and spider mites are common pests. You can kill them in a few seconds with the help of rubbing alcohol and cotton cloth. You need to wipe the plant leaves and you will get surprised by the results.

Yellow leaves are the second most common problem in cube blue pothos care after root rot. Harsh light can turn a beautiful silvery bluish leave into yellow color.

Also, the lack of water in the plant pot triggers the same problem.
